Decades Vintage Boutique

By Emily Dowden-Estes
Like most women, I love to shop. As a self-proclaimed “shop-a-holic,” it’s important for me to find clothing stores that offer unique, yet reasonably priced merchandise. That’s why I was thrilled to discover Decades Vintage Boutique in downtown Springfield, MO.

I happened upon their facebook website quite by accident. Right away their description caught my eye, “Decades specializes in vintage fashion from the 1920s to the 1970s. Our favorite loves are mid-century pieces from the 50s.” I couldn’t believe that such a store actually existed in the midst of a 21st century world—and right in my own city! Of course I had to go check it out for myself. I was not disappointed!

I met the owner, Jina Gorham, (and her adorable little dog, Lela) who was more than helpful in answering all my questions. She made me feel right at home as I “played dress up” with the exuberant supply of retro apparel. I felt like Carol Brady in a Bohemian jumpsuit with sheer fabric and Grace Kelly in an elegant, French inspired black lace cap veil. I tried on everything from a 1920s styled flapper dress, to an adorable number from the 50s that looked like it came straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. I was like a wide eyed kid in a candy store. The time flew by because I was having so much fun. I wound up staying/playing in the store for more than two hours.

I think most women have fond memories of playing “dress up” as little girls, which is probably why we still love to do it as adults. That never really goes away. I can remember digging through my grandma’s closet and basement as a child, and finding scarves, funny hats, old dresses, long gloves, and big pearl necklaces from the 50s-70s. While shopping at Decades, I flashed back to those scenes from my childhood, because that is exactly what it was like, only on a much larger scale than Grandma’s closet! It was that same thrill of finding “garments from yesterday” and accessories, except with a grown up appreciation and love for fashion.

The best part about Decades is that it’s not just for “dress up.” It’s an ideal place to shop if you’re going to a costume party, yes, but many of these one-of-kind pieces can be utilized in everyday life. Timeless, innovative looks that mirror trends from decades gone by can currently be found on the runways and any fashion guru will attest that it’s stylish to have variety in your wardrobe. Retro is the new modern and to prove my point, I wound up purchasing several items, myself. The prices are very affordable and I was amazed at how much I got for so little.

Overall, it was a very charming, pleasant, and nostalgic shopping experience. With a wide selection of posh men’s attire too, I would highly recommend Decade’s Vintage Boutique to anyone who wants to step back in time, or step out in great looking classic and chic clothing!
